  • Established in 1972, the University of Colorado School of Medicine established the Kempe Center—the first of its kind—to understand better and prevent child maltreatment and to serve affected children and their families. For 50 years, the Kempe Center has promoted global understanding, knowledge, and best practices to prevent and treat child abuse and neglect. We acknowledge the tension between our history and the current-day public reckoning of how various stakeholders, scholars, and practitioners view the contributions of the Kempe Center. As such, we are both lauded and scorned as the birthplace of the modern-day child protection movement. We are committed to truth-telling in child welfare: looking inward and catalyzing justice doing through truth-telling in communities.

Our name reflects our commitment to the preciousness and interconnectedness of life on our planet.
